The simple answer to your question is no -- put the shifter in neutral and lift straight up, either with help or an engine hoist. You might try to loosen the cover first by tapping in a thin, rigid paint scraper in a couple of places. What you did is why I don't use an air ratchet. While you are inside, drain and wipe out all the crud that will be in there.
