Negative ground but with a generator???

I have new-to-me nice bright "H." It has a 6v battery with definitely the negative cable going to ground and the positive to the starter button and then to the starter. The coil says 6v and the neg from the coil goes to the distributor. The tractor has a generator. I thought, in my very limited knowledge, that if it had a generator, that it would have a positive ground system. What am I missing?
