In July the high line to the rear lift cylinder blew. took a while to work off the frozen control valve connector, so the hose was disconnected at the cylinder (but plugged) during that time. I suppose it could have picked up some moisture then, since it sat under a tarp for 2 months (I"m a slow worker!). I finally replaced the line and started her up, after a few minutes I got pressure and its worked fine ever since for road scraping, snow removal etc. I didn"t add fluid. When it stopped working, it made noise and had a lot of choppy stuttery vibration, then quit lifting, then slowly dropped my front bucket and backscraper down. Can"t move it off the road. The noisy pump sound stopped and I was guessing low fluid let air in somehow. No change after I added fluid, wouldn"t move the pistons to work out any trapped air. Ok, I won"t crack a line to test. Now sounds like it might be a frozen water in the line somewhere. We had a big thaw today around 40 deg, so I"m hoping the problem goes away. I don"t see how the strainer is the problem unless it suddenly clogged up, which seems unlikely. I"m thinking about heating with a torch, but haven"t a clue where the ice block might be, if there is one. Any ideas?

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
