DM you are on the right trail. I think the pin will come out either side. After lifting out shifter look down the hole and you can see rails. Take a big screwdriver or something like it and alighn the recessed notches in rails to the same middle position this will be neutral. reinstall shifter and pin it should work. You are stuck in 4th gear. There is no certain amount to build up that shifter. Use a little trial and error. Good Luck.
