Front axles are designed so that a line from the top down through the spindle pivot would extend down to meet the ground at the center of the tire tread. If set up like this, when the wheels are turned, they can pivot on this line. Using larger tires, or more of a rim offset, can move the tire out from this pivot point. When that happens it greatly increases the effort needed to turn the wheels since they now have to move in an arc rather than just pivoting. Also by moving the tires out you greatly increase the load on the wheel bearings because the wheel assembly acts like a lever rather than just pushing straight up through the spindle. Reversing the dish on the wheels and using a loader and you are almost sure to have broken spindles and/or bearing problems. A larger diameter tire will raise the axle up so that the center line of the spindle moves out from the center of the tractor so that you can now run a wider tire without increasing the load on the spindle or bearings.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
