Dan, I wish I had a good answer for you but maybe it'll make you feel better to know that I have struggled unsuccessfuly with these many times. I've slaughtered many a tie rod tube with heat and a disc grinder. The new ones are available at an outrageous cost. The last one I did I got some tubular steel and made new ones. They've got to slide freely.
