My friend, you may have separated the ring gear from the flywheel. Take off the starter, and look for normal attachment of the ring gear. You may find the problem there, if so - sorry, it's tear down time. Otherwise, put the tractor in high gear (with switch OFF OFF OFF OFF)and gently rock the tractor forward by hand and observe the ring gear through a complete cycle, looking for broken teeth or signs of partial separation of the ring gear (I think it would be obvious). If you have broken teeth, then where are they? Wherever they are is NOT good, but you would have to find and account for all the lost gross metal, and I hope your tractor hasn't already tried to digest ring gear teeth, cause it would have a severe case of indigestion right now. Oil Pan good place to look for teeth. Surely do this before running the tractor any more, even by pulling it off. You may not avoid breaking the tractor apart, but you might avoid a major engine job. The noise (I hope for you dearly!!!) was just the sound of the starter drive grinding against the ring gear, and that the ring gear is not damaged beyond reasonable use. When you replaced the starter, was it the whole starter assembly including drive, or just the motor part? If just the motor, did you observe the starter drive gear? If not, that may be the problem, since the drive gear may be worn and caused the lock-up in the first place. Smoke? How much? Like a house burning down, or like a little crankcase ventilation that may be normal? Particularly after a failed hard starting binge. That's a judgement call that requires actuall sight of it. Also, if with the starter off and the tractor in high gear (road gear), you cannot advance the ring gear by gently rocking the tractor forward, you have heap big problem - sorry. RKS

Today's Featured Article - Memories of an IH Super A When I was ? up to 10, I worked on my Papaw's farm in Greeneville, TN every summer. As I grew older (7), it was the thrill of my day to ride or drive on the tractor. My Papaw had a 1954 IH Super A that he bought to replace a Cub. My Papaw raised "baccer" (tobacco) and corn with the Super A, but the fondest memory was of the sawmill. He owned a small sawmill for sawing "baccer" sticks. The Super A was the powerplant. When I was old enough (7 or 8), I would get up early and be dressed to ... [Read Article]
