As far as which is a better tractor, it's mostly a question of which diesel engine is the best. All three used the same basic gas engine (263 in a 656, 291 in a 666 or 686), and those are all dogs if you ask me. 656 Diesel had the D-282, which was just a gas engine converted to run on diesel. The connecting rods are quite small, it only has four main bearings, and only has 14 head bolts. Don't get me wrong, they're a great engine for anything other than heavy tillage, great fuel economy, just not a true heavy-duty diesel design. 666 and most 686's had the D-312, which is a scaled-down version of the old reliable 414/436/466. Very well built and reliable. Late 686's have the German-built D-310, which is also an exellent engine, but they absolutly stink when idling around. I put many hours on a 310 powered 686, great tractor aside from the smoke/stink and the lack of power brakes. As far as shifting issues, they can have their problems, but are in no way like the bigger 86 series- that is a totally different transmission/shift linkage.
