The change to pressure balanced rings/pistons made the change to the top breather necessary. These rings have a larger gap on the top compression ring to allow more combustion pressure to get to the second compression ring. There was a relief groove added to the piston to aid in this also. This was to help equalize the wear on the two rings to extend durability. The increased gap also allows more blow by to enter the crankcase. This increased flow will carry oil thrown off of the camshaft out the side breather hole. The switch to the top breather was to correct this problem. When replacing sleeves/pistons in an older engine with the side breather, the type of rings used will determine whether or not the breather location must be changed.
