That's absolute B.S.! The impulse; besides retarding timing at cranking speed; makes for a MUCH HOTTER spark at cranking speed by causing a rapid change in the magnetic field in the mag's coil as the rotor "snaps" forward. No impulse operation @ cranking speed equals slow change in the magnetic field in the mag's coil which equals weak spark at cranking speed. Period.
