gene, I agree. I used it on ALL of my fittings when I redid the hoses. When I had to address the filter, there was one hair of tape, and I know it wasnt mine, because it was under ages of gunk. The trick is to start the tape in about 2 threads and CUT the end, so theres not slivers all over the place. And wrapping it the right way is important as well...
Ideally tapered threads pretty much seal, especially when new, but if you are plumbing lines and fixing a leak in the future would require major disassembly, like mine, I decided to go with some sort of sealant.
