H steering shaft removal help

I'm trying to remove the shaft to remove radiator. I loosened u-joint and started screwing shaft out the front of bolster. The problem is the shaft is keyed where it connects to the u-joint, and the key prohibits it from passing through the bearing at the support where the gages are. In researching the archives I've seen no one mention that the shaft is keyed, it is supposed to just screw out. All advice is welcome.
