With the cover off you should be able to see the valve train move as it is turned over. If it does not, that is the problem. Either a gear in the cam drive, or key way sheared, or broken cam. all are possible if a valve was stuck, and the lifter did not bend. A free turning engine also may have all the valves, or many, stuck open. See if there is massive play in the valve assembly if they do operate. Good luck, JimN
