I can"t quite tell from you comments if you have no compression, or low compression. If you have low compression, I"d take another look at the compression release mechanism, if it"s working, check to see if the starting valves are stuck open (a common problem). The compression release cams push down on some caps (inverted cups) that sit on top of the starting valve stems. If any of the caps aren"t moving up and down as you work the compression release, those valves are stuck open, and will reduce your compression to the gas engine ratio of 6:1 or something like that.
