George, engines run better and longer if they are operated at a relativly constant temperature. In addition they perform at their best when the temperature is correct for the design clearances etc. The large temperature fluctuations on these engines makes for large mixture differences and that changes HP, and economy significantly. Besides all that, I just like to see the temp gauge come up to what my brain says is 'normal'.
