Back in the 50's when my dad got laid off and we were hurtin for money, I recall him pouring out the acid in a battery and then filling it with water and shaking and inverting a battery to flush out the deposits on the bottom that would gradually fill it and short out the plates. He would keep doing it till nothing came out, (maybe 40 times), then replace the acid and it would work again. Sounds like that stuff does it chemically.
