My '44 M has the cable controlled 9-speed like you describe. Mine at least is an M & W. I remember that our local IH dealer did sell M&W stuff also. My uncle had them put a hand clutch kit on his new M before they brought it out.
Be careful with the 9-speed, it also speeds up the pto.
