If you are getting air into the system, and that is what it sounds like, there are only a couple of possible places where it can come from. The air must be entering the system on the suction side of the pump. If the fluid level is correct and the filter is OK, then there has to be leak somewhere or oil is not returning fast enough to replenish the area of the pickup tube. Adding additional oil is a good way to check this. Another possibility is foaming of the oil. When the pump pressure starts to fail, look at the dipstick to see if the oil is full of foamy bubbles. This can be caused by oil returning at the upper part of the reservoir instead of below the oil level. I do not know where the return is on a 544. Fast dropping of the hitch can occur if the hydraulic oil is full of bubbles. I would get the other problem fixed first and then see if this is still a problem.

Originally the company was called the Cleveland Motor Plow Company which began in 1912, then the Cleveland Tractor Company (1917) and finally Cletrac.
