That plate should come out by grasping the raised portion of it. It may have some corrosion under it that is preventing it from coming out. Spray some WD-40 around the outside edge of it and let it work awhile, then try again. If it dosen't move, you can take a flat tipped screwdriver and try to pry it out or take a hammer and place the tip of the screwdriver on raised portion of plate and lightly tap on it to try to break it loose.
