Hi, The starter switch on the WD9 should be on the starter operated by a control rod, anything else has probably been modified. If these old diesels miss you should always be suspious of a cracked head unless you can find another cause. The gas-diesel control lever is on the left, looks just like the throttle lever on the right, they never made a diesel which switched itself. I have run a WD9 for forty years, be happy to help, Chuck
