Sounds to me like the TA clutch is bad - when you get under a load the TA clutch starts slipping and it goes to low range. First thing I would do is make sure the TA and clutch linkage is adjusted PERFECTLY by the book! After that to check for sure I would do the following: Drive in 5th gear with TA lever ahead (direct) until you hear/feel the slipping. Pull the TA lever back and keep going, if there is no more slipping/noise try stepping on the brakes a little bit. If you can't make anything slip with the TA in low range (pulled back) then it must be the TA clutch that is bad.
