Does the previous owner have any bridges to sell? When I had my D-17 rebuilt, we found the sleeves worn out of round. I don't know, but maybe this is common for these low speed, high torque engines. There must be some reason tractors have sleeves and cars don't. If I'd replaced just the rings and not the sleeves, I bet I'd have just the situation your buddy has. A good start might be a fuller definition of what "complete rebuild" means.
