If a vehicle had a twelve-volt system, my dad used to say you had to run it two or three times a month to keep the battery charged. This was certainly true of our old Chrysler. Six volt batteries were even worse in this regard; dad used to start his Borgward and run it till warm once a week without fail. His father used to get coals from the stove and put them under his Fordson to warm it in the coldest weather. Of course, he kept an eye out for fuel leaks...
