The regular brake system is sorta convoluted. It has a "hand operated" lever on the left side to apply the brake on the left wheel only. Then, there are cables that are hooked to the left and right side on the rear. The cables hook to a lever on the front wheel assembly. So, if you turn right, the right cable applies the brake on the right side and vica versa. TW
