I don't think it was a "common" problem. I have a pair of these early hubs and a really like them. For me, These early hubs are better becase they are stronger than the later ones. My H had the late ones and all of the mounting spots were welded up on one rim, and two on the other with one cracked again and the rims on them where cracked around the rivet holes, so I changed to the early ones, they were correct for my 1943. I like these early style hubs better because they look better and to me, they seem stronger and better made, although the late ones are nice because you can adjust the tread (how far apart the wheels go out or in) Hope this helps.
