What the H is going on here????????

I just replaced the valve cover on my 42 H. When I Removed the cover there were deep piles (1/4" deep)of oily rust flakes. I cleaned it all up, resealed it & Changed the oil. Am I looking at a major problem in the future, or just a querky old motor. Additional & possibly irrelivant info. Runs great, Bought it last year, runs a little hot(it brush hoged 50 acres last fall.) Started on the first try after sitting all winter,One medium puff of smoke on the first start of the year,clean running every start after that. Thanks for your input.
