B Final Drive removal

I need to replace the oil seal in the final drive on the differential shaft. What is required to remove the final dive to access the seal? I have removed the wheel and all the bolts holding the final drive to the differential shaft housing. The final drive will move about 1/4 inch. But it appears the the differential shaft is moving with the final drive. What step am I missing? The IT shop manual doesn't describe how to remove the final dive very well.
