I guess I must have been lucky. I bought my 1950 "H" in 1980 and it was a real oil burner. I tore it down in the back yard one day. Since it had pretty good oil pressure, I decided to leave the crank alone opting for new sleeve and domed Hastings piston kit and connecting rod inserts. I bought some valve gring compound, took apart the valves and re-seated them. The hardest job was getting the sleeves out. At that time I couldn't find a puller so an old IH mechanic told me about a screwdriver, and breaking them out. That proved to be fairly straight forward. So, I put it all back together not bothering to look at cam, cam bearings, gears and the like. Lo and behold, the old thing ran like a clock and still does 20 years later I run a farm and use "H" for any and all jobs from baling to hay conditioning, manure spreading, sawing wood, ploughing and harrowing, etc "H" takes it all in stride. I wouldn't be put off by trying to rebuild one. Work slow and methodical and don't touch any more than you have to. I'm very fussy about two things... keeping the motor in tune and engine oil and filter changes. You would really have to abuse an engine like the "H" to damage a cam gear or crank. So good luck and have fun!
