It is more than likely the filler neck on the tank. Our W-6's has a real groove worn in it from opening and closing the cap for 50 years. When gas was following the weld around the tank and back behind the electrical box when the tank was half full, I became more than a little concerned. I took the tank off, ran it over to the dealer, and the head mechanic used the tool and fixed it for no charge. It was a really simple device. There was a circular plate on the top with a hole in the center, and then a second part that went in the tank and had protrusions that stuck up inside of the hollow area between the cap stops and the outside of the neck (kind of like a 3 jaw puller with the arms reversed, but of fixed diameter and with longer hooks on it). It had a threaded bolt in its center and was held to the top piece with string. When the nut on the bolt was tightened against the plate, it would "press" the sealing surface flat. Even afterwards, though, ours leaked. I put two rubber o-rings in (one new and one old) and that fixed it, as the old one was worn down quite a bit, but it still seeped with just the new one.
