Determining how your “trouble” sound relates to engine RPM can help you zero in on its source. For example, if it clicks 1,000 times at 1,000 RPM, it’s likely crankshaft-related. If it clicks 500 times, suspect something related to the camshaft. At typical idle speeds you should be able to hear and count the clicks for, say, 15 seconds, then multiply by four. Even if you’re off by a little, you’ll be able to tell the difference between 500 and 1,000. Mark W. in MI
