TDK - It's been a while since I messed with an externally-regulated Delco alternator. However if memory serves the alternator's R terminal is used only when a dash-mounted charging system idiot light is installed.

So if your 454 has got an ammeter and not an idiot light, no connection is required to R.

Hopefully someone else can confirm!!
