Switch Off. Take the distributor cap off, turn the engine over in its normal direction with the starter (or fan blade) and note which way the distributor rotor turns. Then rotate the distributor in the same direction that the rotor turned to retard timing. Time engine (paraphrasing IH): 1. Determine which way the rotor normally turns (above). 2. Switch Off. Loosen distributor clamp bolts. Remove #1 sparkplug (nearest radiator). Place thumb over SP hole & turn engine until pressure is felt. Use a flashlight to see top of piston & turn engine slightly (w/fan blade) for piston at highest point of movement (or DC on timing mark). 3. Remove center wire on dist cap & wedge it under a dist cap clip so it's end is positioned 1/16 to 1/8" from the dist points/coil terminal. 3. Turn on Ign switch and check Ammeter for Discharge indication. If no Disc, turn dist in same direction as rotor normally turns just until Ammeter does show a discharge. From a Discharge showing, advance timing by slowly turning Dist back in the opposite direction to normal rotor rotation and stop when a spark occurs at the wire you wedged in the clip. 4. Turn off switch, replace wire, sparkplug, and tighten distributor clamp.
