Bare with me on this. Try running a hot wire from battery to the coil and see if it will start using the starter. My M done this several years ago and nearly drove me crazy trying to figure it out. Some think I am crazy, but after repacing all electrical components such as points,coil,condensor. switch and even some of the wiring none of it helped a bit. Like yours I could pull it 2 feet and it would start and run fine. If you tried to start with starter it lost all spark to the points and would do nothing. I still am not sure what was wrong excactly, but I finally put on a new voltage regulator and it has started every time since.
