The old seal was a double seal in a metal housing. I was thinking the same thing when I removed mine and it was a bear to remove. My parts man suggested putting in 2 of the new seals back-to-back which is what I did. Just check your PTO shaft to make sure there has not been a groove worn by the old seal so you don't place the new one in that exact spot.
