Hugh, I use the old no 8 as well and like it quite well. The 3 point mounted plow will work fine, most folks have a hard time getting them adjusted properly. For the last 25 years or longer mounted plows are nearly all that is used here. This is because here most tractors are small compared to the giants of corn country. The most common plow here now is a 3 bottom fully mounted plow and yes lots of folks do a pi$$ poor job of plowing with them, but there are some of us that can adjust them to work quite well. Like you said about the no 8, I just hook to it and go. I also use a couple fast hitch plows that work well too. The best mounted plows I have used are the 531 IH and the 81 MF which is an Oliver plow, nearly all other mounted plows will not plow with either one of these. I have watched guys mess with a mounted plow and make the biggest mess of plowing you ever seen, but most of this is operator difficulty.
