It'd be a good idea to find out EXACTLY what was going on when it "died" on him. If he'd been really using it all day, and it died while hot before he'd had a chance to cool it down, there's good chance that it caused problems in the head- either cracked or warped starting valves. If you can get it going these should show up. The MD will be good on fuel economy but if you have to start putting alot of work into the engine, the higher cost will eat up any potential fuel savings pretty fast. Hopefully it's nothing serious- good luck!
