Dear James,
Buy or borrow a cheap voltmeter, then with the points closed check the voltage on the positive side of the coil which should be on the distributor side. The voltage should be 0. Now go to the negative side of the coil which is the battery side and the voltage should be 6. Both tests are with points closed, key on, and engine stopped. Let us know what you find.
