I have painted them silver/white/ and cream over the years. I paint them cream from now on. I would suppose that they were painted grey when new, just as mentioned below. Many other tractor brands have the letters painted and it looks good, so i follow suit and only because everyone else does. It is commendable that you are trying to be as accurate as you can, but some things i believe such as that can be left up to the owner IMHO. It is all good as far as i'm concerned. Those "other guys" can sweat the details. LOL
