The Mag is driven my a gear that is under the front cover of the engine. The gear is part of the system at the front of the engine that turns the injector pump, and the camshaft. Likely as others said, one or more of the gears has teeth missing. I suppose the front cover is going to have to be pulled off. According to my info there are 5 gears in there. The crankshaft pinion (This gear drives them all), The camshaft gear, the magneto gear, the injector pump gear and an idler gear. As others said, if there is a live hydraulic pump in front of the mag, then the magneto gear is probably stripped. This gear on the MD was not designed for the load of a hydaulic pump.
