I just went trough all that on my 51 H. Mine had maybe a gallon of oil in it and at least 3 gallons of water! The left axle seal leaked like crazy after I changed the oil but quit after a day or so. Usually a leaky seal means a sloppy bearing. My outer wheel bearing was toast. the inner is ok but turns rough so I am changing it too, infact I am doing it today. I got my bearings from Car Quest for $106 each, IH wanted over 200 each. also My H has a really noisy trans and I had some bearing retainer pieces come out with the oil water mix so there is bad bearings in there somewhere. I decided I am just going to go through the whole thing and change all the bearings since it had so much water and condensation in it. The gears I have seen so far have not on bit of rust, and look like new, (water damage) but the bearing balls do have dark spots and will fail down the road. and I think that is what I will do a lot of with it, Tractor drives! Also, I think I would just fix the engine that has the knocking, it sounded like a neat tractor with the different tranny and all, be a shame to gut it out.
