Bob - The "pole in the wheel" thing can work. But you can easily put a LOT more continuous torque on the crankshaft like this: Engage (push in) the starting crank shaft extension at the front of the tractor. Next take your biggest pipe wrench and grab the crank shaft extension. Orient the wrench so it's turning the shaft clockwise and so the wrench handle is on the LEFT side of the tractor. Now slip a cheater pipe (4 or 5 ft length of steel pipe) over the wrench handle for leverage. Finally hang a 100 lb or so of weight on the end of the pipe and let her sit. Net effect you'll be appling 400 - 500 ft lb of torque continuously to the crankshaft. And you will know right away if/when the engine breaks loose!
