This is a real long shot, but it may be worth a look.

I had a mower that did the same thing. It turns out a little piece of a stick had gotten caught in the V of a pulley. As the mower ran, the belt really jammed the wood into the groove and polished it smooth. It wasn’t much bigger than a pencil eraser, but each time the belt hit that bump on the pulley it would shake the belt. The belt would either hit a guard and fray its own outer backing, or just jump off the pulley. It took a little effort to clean the pulley because that piece of wood was really wedged in.
