rebuilding the shifting lever of an H

Ok, I think I have determined the sloppyness in my transmission. I belive it to be the shift lever. How do I go about knowing what it looked like when it was knew to build the end back up. Or is it just trial and error to make it fit? I'm hopeing that I can fix it by doing this. Also the bearings of the waterpump is out, is it a very simple task to change those out? Thanks Derek
