The starter in a 12V auto has windings sized for 12V, so they will draw less current. A 6V starter will have larger guage wire in the windings, drawing more current. I disagree with the idea that a 6V starter will run hotter at 12V than at 6V, since it will crank a shorter time and won't be drawing stall current. Starter drive and ring gear take more abuse, though, due to greater torque.
