I think the most important observation is, - - was the tractor in good cranking and running condition when you bought it and is it still so? If yes, sounds to me like it was correctly done and I would leave it alone. The points are fine with either 6V or 12V. How do you know it's a 12V coil? Conversions to 12V don't require a new coil, just the resistor. The resistor just must be in series with the ignition, but it really wouldn't matter where as long as somewhere between the dist and the ignition (mine is between the coil and the ignition switch), since the resistor just limits current in the entire series, and prevents the coil from overheating with too much current.
