6V. to 12V. Question

I recently purchased a tractor that has been converted from a 6 volt system to a 12 volt system. The resister is put in the ljne on the switch side of the coil. The coil is 12 volt. The other side of the coil goes to the points. Is this correct or should I have a 6 volt coil to prevent point burn up? Should the resister have been put in the line between the coil and points?
