I have a Exhaust pipe flap on my MTA but rain water will sill make it into my cylinder thru the connections. I would'nt get too complicated, if your exhaust was uncovered during the rain, I would pull the plugs and spin the engine over as fast as you can with a 12 volt battery and try to blow some of that water out of the cylinders. You said you had wires back on dist. correctly, and remember #1 cylinder is nearest to the radiator. Also I had an old Ford truck that I used to keep a can of WD-40 on the front seat of in case it rained. The WD stands for "water displacement"' I would spray a small on my coil and wires everytime it rained because she would spit and sputter. Take a little of that and spray in your dist. Keep it simple, it ran good before the rain.
