I would say if money is not the most critical factor, and the sheet metal is excellent, go for it. The tires alone may be worth $500 or more. Red - Whatd'ca new tires for the formerly "Dang Ole 51" run? Cranking and running good eliminates a lot of problems, lots and lots! but it doesn't eliminate charging problems, running hot problems including radiator leaks, clutch or transmission problems (I would ask them to let you drive the tractor and get a feel for the gears, noises, slipping, grinding, etc.) A clutch requires a break-apart and maybe $400-500 or more. Does the rear pto shaft leak? Look for green in the oil which might indicate a cracked block, and see if you can get a compression guage on it looking for no more than 15-20% variation from high to low. Does it have the belt pulley on it? I'd have given $500 more for my 41 H if the belt pulley had been on it, and the sheet metal a little better. Is it 6V or 12V? If 6V and the lights are still on the tractor plus it cranks, runs, and charges properly, then you are maybe just a $200 paint and decal job away from a near original H that would easily be worth $2,000-3,000 or much more. For example, if Red sold you the "formerly Dang" and there was no sentimental value in it, you couldn't get it for probably under $3,500 cause he's got that much or more in the excellent job he's done. But, go look at it at his site, and tell me what you'd bid for "it" if found under a barn shed at an auction. Now his H is near "new" condition. I paid $800 for mine, but the seat was off a super C, the lights are missing, the tires are 5%, the belt pulley is missing, the sheet metal was 60%, and it was incorrected converted to a 12V alternator which I corrected. Except for lights and decals, I'm finished including paint for under $1,200. From 50 yards away, mine looks like it just rolled out of the factory. I'll eventually get the pulley and lights but I'll stay with the 12V alternator, negative grounding system, and 12V battery. Having said all that - I'd say bidding under 2 g's is smart, 2-3 g's risky, and over $3,000 might insult the "Tractor Gods," and if they get insulted, they will think you have too much money and will separate you from an amount they deem adequate. Good luck. RKS
