Another F-20 Paint Question

I have a 1936 F-20 s/n 66137 which is/was painted red (possibly incorrectly). I am finding quite a bit of black paint under red on the engine, like on the back of the carburetor, under the oil filter base and other fittings, etc. Were the engines ever painted black with the rest of the tractor painted red? I have been unable to find any trace of the Dark Grey on any part of the tractor. Could the black be a primer which was not covered by the factory red?
