There is a little square nut in the bottom of the oil filter assembly. If its not torn up, unscrew that to drain 2 or 3 tablespoons of oil before removing the cover. The big nut takes a 7/8 inch wrench on that nut. When you change the oil filter, take the time to dig out the old rubber gasket that the can squeezes onto. A new gasket should come with your filter. You don't have to replace it each time, but the one in there may be ancient.
